Statistical Highlights 2nd match: India v Australia at Galle on 23-8-99Mohandas Menon This match was the 1486th in Limited overs international (LOI) history. This match was India's 406th and Australia's 437th in LOIs. This match was the 56th meeting between the two sides. Sri Lankan umpire JV Jayasundara was officiating in his first LOI match. MSK Prasad was playing in his 3rd LOI match. His earlier two matches were against Bangladesh and Kenya on 14-5-98 and 20-5-1998 at Mohali and Bangalore respectively. Since then he is making a come-back after missing 46 matches for India. Sachin Tendulkar was appearing in his 55th match as captain. This was his second stint as captain after missing 63 matches in between. He had last captained India against Sri Lanka at Goa on 28-12-97. Venkatesh Prasad's wicket of Mark Waugh was his 20th on Sri Lankan soil, making him the Indian bowler with maximum wickets. Playing in his 18th match in Sri Lanka he betters the tally of Anil Kumble who now has 19 wickets in 22 matches. Adam Gilchrist's 68 was the highest individual score by an Australian keeper against India. The previous highest was the 61 by Gilchrist himself at Kochi on 1-4-98. Incidentally it was the sixth highest score by a keeper against India. Andrew Symonds who was playing in his 3rd LOI match, but in his only 2nd innings made his maiden fifty (68 not out). He was incidentally the first to score a fifty at this venue. The second wicket partnership of 134 runs between Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds was Australia's highest ever for any wicket in Sri Lanka. The previous best was the 113 between Stuart Law and Steve Waugh for the 4th wicket also against India at Colombo (SSC) on 6-9-1996. The partnership was also the second highest for the 2nd wicket by any team in Sri Lanka. The best for this wicket remains as 166 between Sri Lankans Roshan Mahanama and Asanka Gurusinha against New Zealand at Colombo (Premadasa) on 13-12-1992. Incidentally Australia's best for the second wicket in Sri Lanka was the 72 between Graeme Wood and Graham Yallop against the home team at Colombo (Saravanamuttu) way back on 13-4-1983. This was Australia's ninth consecutive match without defeat (which includes the tie match against South Africa at Birmingham on 17-6-99). Australia's last LOI defeat came at Leeds on 23-5-99 when it lost to Pakistan by 10 runs. Incidentally Australia best sequence without a defeat was from 23-2-1990 to 2-5-1990 when it won ten matches in a row. Andrew Symonds, playing in his third LOI match won his maiden Man of the match award.
