Australia expect to face Ranatunga

World champions Australia expect to face axed Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga during their forthcoming tour.

Skipper Steve Waugh said before the squad departed today that he would be surprised if Ranatunga was not selected as a specialist batsman.

''Particularly in the Test matches. He is such an experienced player and a very good player,'' Waugh said.

''So it depends on whether he fits into their overall scheme and where they are going and whether he can play just as a player and not as a captain. It might be difficult for him, but I'm pretty sure we will see him at some stage.''

Ranatunga, who led Sri Lanka to World Cup victory in 1996, lost his job after the team's dismal performance in defence of their crown in England earlier this year. He was replaced by opener Sanath Jayasuriya.

Ranatunga was also dropped from Sri Lanka's one-day squad but remained on the roster for the three Tests against Australia.

Waugh added: ''Jayasuriya is a good player but it's going to be a big test for him taking over the captaincy, particularly from Ranatunga who was such a strong character and pretty much a strong leader."

Leg-spinner Shane Warne said his shoulder was in good shape after a break following the World Cup. ''So my form in the World Cup can, hopefully, continue in Sri Lanka," he said. "I feel really strong and ready to go.''

Australia face Sri Lanka and India in a triangular one-day tournament, starting next weekend. The Tests follow in September and October.
