Lankans plan tight security

Sri Lanka is to provide tight security for the Australian and Indian cricket teams arriving this week for a triangular one-day tournament, cricket board officials said today.

They said officials of the ministerial security division will guard the cricketers at their hotel, practices and during their matches which will be played in the southern town of Galle and in Colombo.

''Security will be tight, all arrangements have been made. The Australians, Indians and also the Sri Lankan team will be provided with security,'' said an official.

Officials of the Australian Cricket Board have kept in constant touch with their counterparts in Sri Lanka after a Tamil Tiger's rebel suicide bomber last month killed moderate Tamil lawmaker Neelan Thiruchelvan.

During the 1996 World Cup, Australian cricketers refused to play in Sri Lanka because of security fears after 100 people were killed when the Central Bank building in Colombo was blown up.

The Australians arrive tomorrow followed by the Indian squad on Friday. The Australians will stay on to play three Test matches after the one-day tournament.
