Ramnath Parkar passes awayAiling former Test cricketer Ramnath Dhondu Parkar, who was admitted to hospital for jaundice a few days back, passed away late last evening and was cremated today. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter. Parkar (52) was paralysed following a road-accident three years ago and confined to bed since then. Making his Test debut against England at Delhi in 1972-73, the flashy opener played two Tests during that season and made 80 runs in four innings, averaging 20, with 35 as his highest score on debut. An outstanding fielder, he made his Ranji debut in 1970-71 and scored 2862 runs in 52 Ranji matches. He scored six Ranji hundreds and 13 fifties, and took 40 catches. Parkar also represented West Zone in the Duleep Trophy and played in the Irani Cup. He turned coach later and was associated with the Elf Vengsarkar Cricket Academy. In December 1995, a collision between a bus and the scooter he was travelling on left him paralysed. His life since then had been a struggle for survival. Earlier this year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India organised a benefit match for him (and for late Delhi and India star Raman Lamba), with the World Cup teams of 1983 and 1999 clashing at the Wankhede.
