Eddie Barlow to coach Bangladesh

Former South African cricketer Eddie Barlow has been appointed new coach of Bangladesh.

''Barlow has been appointed for a two-year term. He will take up his new assignment on September 1,'' Bangladesh Cricket Board president Saber Hossain Chowdhury said.

He said the BCB approved Barlow's appointment at a meeting yesterday. ''Besides coaching, his responsibility will be to oversee the development of cricket as 'director of development'.''

Barlow, 59, played 30 Tests and scored 2,561 runs, which included six centuries and 15 half centuries. He also took 40 wickets for an average of 34.05 runs with best figures of five for 85.

He succeeded former West Indian opening batsman Gordon Greenidge, who was sacked during the World Cup in May this year following a row with board officials over team selection.

Bangladesh beat Pakistan and Scotland in their maiden World Cup appearence.
