Gormally emerges sole leader

International Master D Gormally (England) emerged the sole leader with four points at the end of the fourth round of the British Chess Championship being played in Scarborough.

Six players including top seed GM Julian Hodgson and GM Pravin Thipsay, are following Gormally just half a point behind, with 3.5 points. Gormally played a beautiful attacking game to upset seed GM John Emms (3) of England.

Top seed Julian Hodgson (3.5) scored a fighting win over IM Abhijit Kunte in king pawn opening. Abhijit (2.5) had space advantage from the opening but failed to develop it. The British top seed had to use all his experience to pocket the full point.

Thipsay (3.5) adopted advance variant of French defence against IM Nicholas Pert (2.5) of England. Thipsay snatched the initiative from the opening and nourished it for a winning kingside attack, to jump to the second position.

IM V Saravanan (3) continued his steady performance with a creditable draw against fourth seed GM Stuart Conquest (3) of England in a Kings Indian game.
