Britons share lead in British Chess

Three Britons, including Grandmasters Peter Wells and John Emms, and International Master D. Gormally, emerged leaders with three points each at the end of the third round of the British Chess Championship being played in Scarborough.

Half a point behind are three Indians, International Masters Abhijit Kunte and V Saravanan, and Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay. The trio have 2.5 points each.

Kunte agreed for a quick draw with GM Stuart Conquest (2.5) of England in Chigorin defence.

Saravanan had a double bishop's advantage against IM Mathew Turner (2.5) of England. Turner, however, defended stubbornly in the ending and Saravanan decided to split the point after 23 moves.

Thipsay had little difficulty while overcoming less-fancied FIDE master C Duncan (1.5) of England.

In another game of fluctuating fortunes, IWM Anupama Gokhale (1.5) missed some promising attacking moves before losing to IM Garry Lane (2.5) of England.

National junior champion S Kidambi (2) continued his steady performance with a well-played draw against GM Aaron Summerscale (2) of England.
