Salve named to ICC probe panelFormer BCCI president N K P Salve has been nominated to the International Cricket Council special committee to probe the match-fixing allegations which have ravaged the game for the last two years. Salve, who took over from the late S K Wankhede as board president in the early eighties, will be the BCCI's representative on the commission. As per instructions from the ICC, each Test-playing nation will send one representative to the commission. Salve, who has also served as Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister, has agreed to take up the assignment, it is learnt. A report quoting Salve said that he had also mentioned that former British Prime Minister John Major, a keen cricket fan, was likely to head the commission. The first leg of the probe will take place in Asia as Pakistan is the hotbed of match fixing allegations, followed by India where former Test star Manoj Prabhakar had accused cricketers of offering bribes to tank a match in Sri Lanka. Both Pakistan and India had its own investigations done by legal persons. While former Chief Justice Y V Chandrachud had exonerated Indian cricketers of the charge, Pakistan judge Mohammed Qayyum has already indicated the involvement of certain players and put the inquiry on hold till the World Cup gets over on June 20. A formal announcement of Salve's appointment, by the BCCI, is awaited. UNI
