No quarantine on Sobers

Tamil Nadu Cricket Association secretary Ashok Kumbhat has denied that state Ranji Trophy players were directed not to meet Sir Garfield Sobers, who is now in Chennai on a coaching assignment with the MAC Spin Foundation.

Kumbhat maintained that he had not received any complaints from any player that manager K Doraiappan had issued orders to that effect.

He said Sobers did not want to deviate from his assignment, and added that he had invited Sobers to conduct a seperate session for TN Ranji players before he leaves after his two week assignment at the Spin Foundation.

Kumbhat said that V V Kumar, former spinner and chief coach at the foundation, who doubles as chairman of the state selection committee, could not accommodate the state players only because Sobers wanted to concentrate on the job originally assigned to him.

"The TNCA has not directed any player not to meet Sobers and take tips from him," Khumbat asserted.

Meanwhile, the three member panel constituted by the TNCA to enquire into the pitch-tampering scandal during the Ranji pre-quarter final match between TN and Delhi, last year, will submit its report to the TNCA shortly, Khumbat said.

The committee had sought evidence from the players and has finalised the report. The committee was formed following a directive to the TNCA and the Delhi Cricket Association from the BCCI to conduct independent probes to track down the culprit, he added.
