Sasikaran on song in British championships

International master Krishnan Sasikiran, India's latest teen prodigy, held GM Mark Hebden of England to a draw in round three of the British Chess Championships at the Riviera Center, Torquay.

GM Pravin Thipsay was however defeated by Matthew Sadler, ranked 19th in the world. Thipsay, playing black in a Modern Benoni, lost a rook for bishop while attempting to block a pawn advance, and Sadler rode that material gain to a win.

At the top of the table after three rounds are top seeds Nigel Short and Sadler, with three points apiece, along with Peter Wells and Jonathan Rowson.

Sasikaran is locked in a tie for the fifth spot with former World Championship candidate GM Jonathan Speelman and others, all with 2.5 points apiece. Thipsay is grouped below Sasi in the ladder, along with other players, on two points apiece.
