No immediate tax probe against Becker

Despite initiating a series of raids against Boris Becker, German prosecutors said they had no immediate plans of launching a full-fledged tax evasion investigation against the German tennis legend.

Prosecutors, it is learnt, will get involved only after examining a report furnished by city tax officials, who are coordinating the series of raids.

Becker and his former manager Ion Tiriac are suspected of evading taxes on Becker's earnings from 1990 to 1993. The two have consistently denied the accusations.

Interestingly, one of the places searched during the recent raids was the Hamburg office of environmental organisation Greenpeace. Becker is a strong supporter, and it is believed that the tax officials wanted details of tax-free contributions made to the organisation by the tennis superstar, now in semi-retirement.
