Anand voted player of the year

Indian chess ace Vishwanathan Anand has just been named "World Chess Player of the Year".

The Moscow Chess Club gave the Indian ace a reception that, even by its own standards, was unprecedented, to commemorate the award.

The award was sponsored by Russia's top magazine Chess Review, which polled chess experts in 55 countries. This is an annual exercise.

Interestingly, all experts were unanimous in naming the Indian ace, who this year has defeated the likes of Garri Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik, while rising to the number two slot in both the FIDE and PCA rankings.

Earlier this year, Anand also wrested the prestigious Chess Oscar, via a similar global poll, from holder Garri Kasparov.
