Computer glitches worry Games organisers

Organisers of the Commonwealth Games faced power outages and computer glitches during trials, but say they are confident the event proper will go off smoothly.

Cautioning that the priority should be to put things right rather than apportion blame, Hashim Mohamad Ali, chairing the Games committee, said a flat out effort would be put in place to ensure that everything was perfect for the Games.

The major problem, for now, is the inability to put in place the network that lets the centralised computer link with all five venues.

In order to test infrastructural facilities, the Games authorities are now running trials in athletics, squash, gymnastics, swimming, cycling, men’s hockey and cricket.

A post mortem is expected to follow the exercise, in order to identify problem areas and work towards solving them.

Hashim Mohammad Ali indicated the the computer network, basic communications and ground transport would be the priority areas for the organisers at this point in time.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad threw open a multi-million-dollar sports complex for the Games, and a rail link from the centre of Kuala Lumpur to the complex.
