Indian team for world blind chess championships

send this story to a friend

For the first time ever, an Indian team will take part in the Individual World Chess Championships for the blind, to be held at Brno, in the Czech Republic, between July 3-13.

Swapnil Shah, Madan Bagaytkar, Sanjay Karandikar and Charudatta Jadhav will represent the country in the ninth edition of the championship for the visually impaired.

The four players were selected on the basis of their performance in the last nationals for the blind. A top six finish in the world championship will entitle them to play the Olympiad, to be held from September 24 in Elista, in the Kalmikiya Republic.

International master Sajandas Joshi accompanies the side as coach, while Ramakant Satam is the manager.

In a nice gesture, the Aditya Vikram Birla Memorial Trust has come forward to foot the entire bill for the players.
