Romario returns with a bang

Romario, whose famous injury necessitating his being sent back by Mario Zagallo just ahead of the World Cup sparked controversy, returned to competitive play after three months, and promptly scored a trademark goal.

Playing for Flamengo, making his comeback, Romario showed little sign of rust. His performance however was overshadowed by a bizarre end to the Bragantino-Vasco da Gama game, as the Brazilian championship moved into its second week.

Referee Marco Antonio Cunha appeared to blow the final whistle, the players swapped shirts and began their way to the dressing room. The referee then changes his mind, consulted his fellow officials, and decided to continue the game.

Defending champions Vasco, who had two players -- midfielder Nasa and central defender Alex -- and their coach Antonio Lopes sent off during the first half but still managed to hang on for a 0-0 draw, refused to return to the field, protesting against the decision.

It is not clear what the situation is, with regards to the game. Brazilian Football Confederation officials were unavailable for comment.

Romario meanwhile scored in a 3-1 win over Coritiba. After leaving France in tears, his only appearance has been in a friendly for his club in late June, where he scored a goal. Since then, he has been troubled by muscular problems.

Santos now leads the championship table with seven points in three games.

The top eight teams in the table qualify for the quarter-finals.
