Tiwari is UP Congress chief
Narain Dutt Tiwari has been appointed president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee.
Congress president Sitaram Kesri announced Tiwari's appointment on Friday in the presence of party vice-president Jitendra Prasada who has opposed the veteran's elevation to the UPCC office.
This is Tiwari's second term as UPCC chief in recent times.
Tiwari, who succeeds Prasada, was appointed UPCC president
on August 23, 1994. He later left the party to form the Indira Congress following his differences with then prime minister and
Congress chief P V Narasimha Rao.
Rao appointed Prasada as UPCC chief on
January 1,1995.
Tiwari has served the state as chief minister for three terms.
