10 killed in police firing in CoimbatoreTen people were killed and several others injured on Sunday as violence broke out in Coimbatore in the wake of the killing of a police constable by some miscreants. The constable was killed on Saturday night. The police opened fire in the Kottaimedu area on Sunday afternoon to disperse a violent mob, killing five people. Later, the medical college hospital became a scene of violence as four people were done to death in and outside its premises by irate mobs. The 10th death was reported from suburban Sundarapuram. Six Central Reserve Police Force companies are on their way to the city. Earlier in the day, a youth from Kerala was stabbed when he arrived by bus. Miscreants also set ablaze one of the biggest gunny bag godowns located in the heart of the city. With police personnel remaining passive spectators, the mob took the law into their hands, forcing shops to close. Traffic on the national highway was also disrupted. UNI |
