RS adjourned for fifth dayDefiant Congress members forced the adjournment of the Rajya Sabha for the fifth consecutive day today. They were demanding the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham ministers's ouster from the United Front government. The Lok Sabha was yesterday adjourned sine die. As soon as the Rajya Sabha assembled for the day, Congress members were on their feet, voicing their demand. An anguished Rajya Sabha Chairman, Vice-President Krishna Kant, appealed to the members to have patience and listen to what he had to say. In a prepared speech, the chairman said that the Rajya Sabha has a constitutional role. It is meant to exercise a sobering influence when there is turbulence in political waters. The chairman said he was confident that the members had a deep and abiding interest in playing their duly mandated role in upholding the spirit of the Constitution. ''We have to be very cautious and circumspect in the use of our language and temper. The disorderly happenings and inability to function weaken the parliamentary institutions, democracy and the rule of law.'' He said that he has adjourning the House for the day to allow time for reflection. UNI
