Freedom fighter N Sadasivam deadN Sadasivam, veteran freedom fighter and husband of celebrated Carnatic singer M S Subbalakshmi, died of pneumonia at a private hospital in Madras today. He was 96. He is survived by his wife and daughters Vijaya and Radha. An associate of C Rajagopalachari, the first governor-general of India, for six decades, Sadasivam was the founder-publisher of the popular Kalki Tamil weekly. He had courted arrest several times during the freedom struggle. He married Subbalakshmi in 1940. Subbalakshmi, daughter Vijaya Rajendran and K R Athmanathan, Sadasivam's secretary for 45 years, were at his bedside when the end came at 1016 hours, family sources said. His body was taken to his Kotturpuram residence The body was cremated in the evening. S Thyagarajan, Sadasivam's adopted son, performed the last rites, the sources said. Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and M Karunanidhi offered condolences. Former President R Venkataraman was among those who paid homage to Sadasivam at his home.
