The United States on March 18 denied Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi a visa to visit that country and revoked his tourist/business visa. The US said the decision was taken under the US Immigration and Nationality Act, which prohibits anybody who was 'responsible for, or directly carried out, at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom' from entering the US.
Modi was to visit the US on March 20 on a five-day visit.
India reacted strongly, asking the US to reconsider its decision. Brushing aside all political differences, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led India's protest against the US decision.
