10 killed, 64 hurt in 3 train blasts
At least 10 people were killed and 64 others injured in bomb blasts in three trains in Tamil Nadu and Kerala today, as various Muslim organisations observed the fifth anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
While six passengers were killed and 15 injured in the
blasts that occurred on the Madurai-bound Pandiyan Express and the
Coimbatore-bound Cheran Express in Tamil Nadu, at least
four people lost their lives and 49 injured when a powerful
bomb ripped through an unreserved compartment of the Madras-
Alleppey Express in Kerala.
The 'Islamic Defence Force of Kerala', a new outfit, has claimed
responsibility for the blast that occurred minutes after the
Alleppey Express arrived at Thrissur station at 0747 hours.
The unreserved coach was a virtual wreck.
A letter recovered at the blast site said the action was in
protest against the government's failure to punish those responsible
for the Masjid demolition.
While the blast aboard the Pandiyan Express occurred when the train
was about to leave Tiruchirapalli junction, the explosion on Cheran Express took place when the train had just moved out of Erode
station.
The injured have been admitted to government general hospitals
in Tiruchirapalli and Erode and the Thrissur medical college
hospital.
A report from Coimbatore said the bomb went off in the toilet
of a compartment on the Cheran Express.
