At least 60 massacred in worst-ever Bihar caste feud

In the worst-ever caste feud in Bihar, at least 60 Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninst supporters were massacred by members of the banned Ranbir Sena at Lakshmanpur-Bathe village in central Bihar last night.

The Sena men also killed two boatmen who helped them cross the river Sone after the carnage. The killers sought to destroy any evidence.

Official sources, confirming the death toll, said the deceased also included a few activists of the banned rival militant faction, Party Unity.

Sources said more than a dozen people, critically injured in the attack, had been admitted to the Sadar hospital in Jehanabad.

Nearly 250 Ranbir Sena activists, equipped with firearms, reportedly raided the village at midnight and attacked the villagers who were asleep.

Senior police and district officials along with Director General of Police S K Saxena rushed to the spot with reinforcements. The borders of all adjoining districts had been sealed to nab the extremists.

This massacre surpasses the Delelchak Baghaura mayhem in the late eighties in which 45 people were killed.

Preliminary reports said the Jehanabad police put the toll between 60 and 75. These included women and children of different age groups.
