Storm over Queen's visit ends
The controversy over Queen Elizabeth's visit to Amritsar during her proposed tour of India appears to have ended with Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral saying she was welcome to visit any part of the country.
Talking to the media at Rashtrapati Bhavan after Krishna Kant was sworn in as vice-president of India, Gujral said, ''The queen is an honoured guest. She is welcome to visit any part of the country. There is no restriction on her itinerary.''
Gujral said his government does not want any
controversy during the queen's proposed visit to India.
The prime minister's remark that the queen should avoid visiting Amritsar in an interview to the British Sunday paper The Observer this week had sparked off a controversy.
