Assam resumes counter-insurgency operation in Jorhat, Guwahati
Jorhat district and Guwahati city have once again been brought under the purview of the unified command structure for counter-insurgency operations, official sources said on Monday.
The government had earlier suspended the operation on an experimental basis in the two areas and had provided the police and paramilitary forces with the powers to deal with the situation.
But following the killing of two unarmed senior army officers in Guwahati by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom militants on Friday, the government reviewed the situation and brought the two areas again under the unified command structure.
The state government had excluded the two areas from the unified command structure while extending the counter-insurgency operation for six months, from July 20, in other parts of Assam.
The police have rounded up about 20 people for interrogation in connection with the killing of the two army officers.
