Former Tripura chief minister and sitting Congress legislator Sudhir Ranjan Majumder passed away on Sunday following a massive cardiac arrest.

Majumder, 75, breathed his last in the wee hours after he was shifted to hospital late on Saturday night following a heart attack.

He is survived by his wife.

Elected as an MLA from Bardwali constituency, Majumder was the chief minister of the state when the Congress-Tripura Upajati Juba Samity coalition was in power during 1988 and 1992.

He was first elected to the assembly in 1983 from Khayerpur constituency. From 1986 to 1988, he held the position of opposition leader in the assembly and became the TPCC President in 1988.

He was also the Rajya Sabha MP from 1992 to 1998.

An acute diabetic, Majumder had met party workers and common people all through the day, before he suffered a heart attack.

Majumder started his career as a school teacher before joining politics.

An amiable gentleman, he was always accessible to the common man even during his stint as the chief minister.

It was during his tenure that government employees got maximum financial benefit.

Former chief minister Samir Ranjan Burman, former minister Mati Lal Saha were among others to pay floral tributes to him.
