A police officer and two Bharatiya Janata Party leaders wanted by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team in connection with the post-Godhra riot cases on Wednesday surrendered before a court in Ahmedabad [Images] and were arrested. V S Gohil, who was the inspector at Naroda police station in Ahmedabad during the post-Godhra riots in 2002, surrendered before the metropolitan magistrate G M Patel.
Gohil is currently posted in Junagadh district's Mangrol taluka as circle police inspector.
Gohil was subsequently arrested by the investigating officer in Naroda Gram case. The inspector has been charged with dereliction of duty during the riot at Naroda Gram area where 11 people were killed by a mob on February 28, 2002, a day after the Sabarmati train burning near Godhra.
Local BJP leaders Chunilal Prajapati and Bipin Patel, accused in the Gulburg Society riot case, also surrendered before the SIT at its office in Gandhinagar, SIT sources said, adding they have been placed under arrest.
Prajapati and Patel were named as absconders in the chargesheet filed by the SIT in the case. The duo had applied for anticipatory bail in the sessions court in Ahmedabad but their plea was rejected.
