A bomb disposal squad from Bangalore has defused the explosives that were found at Dharwad in north Karnataka on Friday.

A person had informed police about some suspicious material under a bridge in Dharwad. Once it was discovered that the material was a bomb, the bomb detection squad from Belgaum was immediately pressed into service.

The area was cordoned off. The disposal squad eventually reached Dharwad 7 hours later. The team confirmed that only two bombs had been planted under the bridge.

Dharwad police had initially suspected that five bombs had been planted.

It was found that detonators were connected to a cylinder with a wire, which was around 500 meters long. The material has now been sent to the forensic science laboratory. Only after the tests are conducted can a final conclusion, regarding the material used, be arrived at.

A similar bomb was detected in Channapattanna, about 50 km away from Bangalore. However, the bomb was defused. So far nothing has come up regarding the origin of the bombs.

Police do not rule out the possibility of the bombs being planted to cause destruction and create a scare. The other angle being looked into is whether these were the same bombs, which were supposed to be used in the Bangalore blasts. Police suspect that these bombs were dumped following the state-wide crackdown on terror in the aftermath of the Bangalore blasts.
