After waiting for two days and completing procedural formalities, the Mumbai police today succeeded in getting custody of kidney scam kingpin, Dr Amit Kumar and his brother Dr Jiwan Kumar.
The team headed by Sub-Inspector Sudhir Dakvi boarded the Paschim Express with the two accused on Sunday afternoon.
They will be produced in the court of metropolitan magistrate in Mumbai on Monday. The police team procured production warrants of the accused for taking them to Mumbai. However, it may not be possible for the police to produce the two in the Mumbai court on Monday.
'When I woke up, they told me my kidney was gone'
Police sources said the Mumbai police team were to take accused Dr Upinder along with the two accused but could not do so as the doctor is admitted to the civil hospital in Ambala. He has been in the hospital since the last two days when he fell unconscious in the CBI court during his personal appearance.
The doctors in the civil hospital had stated that Dr Upinder was not fit to travel.
'Kidney buyers don't understand risks involved'
The handing over of the accused to the Mumbai police was delayed due to legal formalities to be completed by the local central jail authorities even after the Mumbai police had obtained the production warrant from the local court.
The accused are likely to be brought back before June 20, as they have to be produced before the CBI court in Ambala on that date.
Dr Amit told media persons at the Ambala Cantonment railway station that he and his accomplices had been implicated in a case registered by the Mumbai Police in 2005. He alleged that the media and the government were blowing the issue out of proportion.
