The Scotland Yard on Wednesday said that it would depute a small team of officers from the Metropolitan Police Service Counter Terrorism Command to Pakistan to provide support and assistance in the investigation into the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto.

"The officers will travel to Pakistan as soon as possible," said a spokesman of the Scotland Yard.

He said that the Pakistan authorities will continue to lead the investigation into Bhutto's death.

The spokesman said, "We confirm that, at the request of the Pakistan government, a small team of officers from the MPS Counter Terrorism Command will be traveling to Pakistan to provide support and assistance in the investigation into the death of Benazir Bhutto [Images]."

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf [Images] on Wednesday night announced that he has sought help from the Scotland Yard for the investigations into the assassination of Bhutto.

Musharraf had said that the detectives will be flying into Pakistan immediately.
