The Bangalore Corporation is considering a proposal to cancel the licenses of establishments that do not have their signboards in Kannada.

The move comes in the wake of a recommendation by the Kannada Development Authority that had said there are still several establishments in the city that do not have sign boards in Kannada.

The corporation, according to the KDA, will come down heavily on those establishments that flout the norms.

The rule will apply to one and all irrespective of political clout or even business stature.

The KDA had demanded that the sign boards be put up in Kannada on par with the content in English both in content and magnitude.

It is learnt that the corporation has already issued a circular to this effect and in the next week notices will be issued to those who have not abided by the norms.

KDA chairman Professor Siddalingaiah said there is a need to implement the local language and also added that there are several people in the state who despite staying here for a considerable amount of time, could not speak in Kannada.

He felt all people should speak in Kannada and queries made in other languages should not be responded to.
