Samajwadi Party nominee and son of former prime minister Chandrashekhar, Neeraj Shekhar on Wednesday won the prestigious Ballia Lok Sabha by-election by a margin of over 1,30,000 votes over his nearest rival, Bahujan Samaj Party's Vinay Shankar Tewari.

Neeraj Shekhar polled over 2,95,000 votes while Tewari polled over 1,64,000 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party's Virendra Singh and Congress' Rajiv Upadhya polled over 22,000 and over 10,000 votes respectively losing their deposits.

Polling for the seat was held on December 29. The seat was vacated following the death of Chandrashekhar in 2007.

Bihar's ruling Janata Dal-United candidate Meena Singh won the Bikramganj Lok Sabha by-poll, defeating her nearest rival, Rashtriya Janata Dal's Ashok Kumar Kushwaha, official sources said on Wednesday afternoon.

According to official sources, JD Meena Singh defeated Kushwaha by nearly 30,000 votes to the Bikramganj seat, where 12 aspirants were in the fray.

Voting in the Bikramganj by-election was held last Saturday, with a 32 per cent turnout.

The Bikramganj Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after the death of JD-U MP Ajit Singh in a road accident.
