With Pakistan's general election marked by a low turnout, the Election Commission chief on Monday said it would have no impact on the legality of the polls.

The election could not be nullified due to a low turnout, Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Muhammad Farooq told reporters while visiting polling stations.

He said there was no legal provision for ordering re-polling in case of a low turnout. It was too early to predict what the final turnout would be but with the passage of time, more voters were flocking to polling stations and the voting was picking up, he said. "There is no provision in the law (for ordering) re-polling if the turnout remains low," he said, adding that there was no benchmark or ceiling for the turnout.

Farooq also said polling had been smooth and orderly across the country. He also met voters.
