The death toll in the spurious liquor case in Shardawadi village, Sudhagad taluka of Raigad district has gone up to 26, with two more victims succumbing at Alibaug civil hospital while undergoing treatment late on Friday night.

The deceased were identified as Chahu Vaigude (40) and Kanu Govind Phate (45), both residents of Shardawadi.

Meanwhile, 12 more people were admitted to different hospitals across Alibaug and Mumbai, taking the total number of people affected to 40.

The Raigad Control room sources told UNI that cases were reported from several talukas of the district.

The incident occurred on January 30 when the inhabitants of Shardawadi village consumed spurious liquor at a wedding party.

The revelers added a substance to the liquor for high intoxication and later complained of stomach ache. The affected people were immediately rushed to the hospital, but six of them died on the same day.
