Kashmir Valley on Saturday was relatively calm as the extended curfew relaxation in Srinagar [Images] and other towns passed off peacefully with few incidents of people staging protests in downtown Srinagar.

Teargas canisters and baton charges were used by the police against the slogan shouting and stone-pelting mobs in Srinagar late on Saturday afternoon.

Curfew was relaxed on Saturday morning in phases in Srinagry and other towns to enable people to buy essentials, which are short in supply, owing to continued curfew since Sunday last, with chemist shops experiencing a huge rush of people buying medicines.

Milk, commodity of daily need continued to be scarce, with majority of households resorting to milk-free tea or the famous Kashmiri kehwa.

Babies have to go through the worst for want of milk and shortage of baby food.

Fresh vegetables are also in short supply, forcing people to buy pulses and few available items of vegetables.

Mutton and chicken were available in few areas compared to the huge demand.

Newspapers couldn't hit the stands for the seventh consecutive day, with news channels still off the air for the fourth day here.
