The Students Islamic Movement of India activists arrested for their alleged involvement in the serial blasts in Ahmedabad [Images] on July 26 are also suspected to have planted bombs in Surat [Images], Crime Branch officials said on Thursday.

"Mufti Abu Bashir and nine others are also suspects in planting of bombs in Surat city. We are interrogating the suspects to find out details of their involvement in the Surat bomb case," Joint Commissioner of Police Ashish Bhatia said.

"The interrogation is still on and the information from the suspects is being collated," Bhatia added.

It is nearly a month since over 25 bombs were found from different parts of Surat, predominantly in the densely populated Varacha area, which were successfully defused by the bomb squad.

Some of the bombs were found hanging from trees and hidden inside hoardings and near police outposts.

Surat Police Commissioner R M S Brar also said that they have obtained important leads into the planting of bomb case.

"We are investigating the matter and are in touch with the Ahmedabad Crime Branch and other agencies. We have got some leads which we are working on," Brar said.

"It will be too early to say that those arrested in Ahmedabad blasts are the only ones involved in the planting of bombs in Surat since their interrogation is still on," Brar added.

Bashir, the mastermind behind the terror attacks in Ahmedabad, has allegedly confessed to his involvement in the blasts.
