Angry over the killing of an engineering student, hundreds of students of the Aligarh Muslim University went on a rampage at the university campus on Monday morning. The angry students ransacked the teachers' staff room and even set the vice-chancellor's residence on fire.
The police said Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Aziz was not present at his residence at the time of the incident.
The protestors later attacked the AMU staff club and the proctor's office, causing heavy damage to property.
According to sources, Mazhar Naeem, a BSc engineering student and resident of Aftab hostel, was shot dead near his hostel by unidentified assailants late on Sunday night.
Naeem, hailing from Parikshatgarh of Meerut district, was rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college, where he was declared brought dead, sources said.
AMU spokesperson Dr Rahat Abrar said that the motive behind the killing of the student has not yet been ascertained. The police are investigating the case.
The Rapid Action Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary had to be called in to bring the situation under control.
