With no rains for the third consecutive day, the flood situation in Manipur improved marginally as all the major rivers began receding.

However, many houses were still inundated with flood-water.

"There was no rainfall for the third consecutive day today which reduced the water levels of Imphal, Nambul and Iril rivers and their tributaries at the Manipur valley," flood control officials said on Thursday.

They said the Imphal west area was improving fast as the water was moving towards Thoubal district, which is at a lower level.

However, waterlogging persisted in Imphal east and Thoubal districts and the water could take almost a month to recede even if there was no further rainfall, the officials added.

Large tracts of agricultural land continue to be inundated. Most rivers flow into Loktak lake resulting in increase in its water level and habitations around the lake getting affected.

Due to the floods, caving in of embankments at many river banks were reported at about 30 places affecting about 55,000 people.

The state government set up about 40 relief camps besides hundreds of camps opened by local organisations. The health department also geared up to check water-borne diseases, the officials said.

Troops, local organisations and legislators had come forward to distribute rice, pulses, drinking water, medicines and other daily necessities to the flood-affected people.
