Former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger on Monday met Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani during which issues related to the civil nuclear deal and other aspects of bilateral relations are understood to have figured.
During the meeting, Kissinger is said to have impressed upon Advani the need for allowing the deal to go through. The BJP, while favouring stronger ties with the US, has been opposing the deal saying it would affect the country's military nuclear programme and independent foreign policy.
The main opposition party has also warned that it would re-negotiate the deal if it came to power. However, lately it has said it was ready to allow the deal to go through if it was convinced that the military programme would not be affected.
The 45-minute meeting came a day after Kissinger pressed for implementation of the nuclear deal, saying questions could be raised over India's trustworthiness if it fails to push it.
