Bangladesh has decided to bring back the remains of a gallantry award recipient from India ahead of the 37th Victory Day celebration on December 16.

The remains of Hamidur Rahman, a soldier of the then East Pakistan Rifles, was expected to be returned in the first week of December in line with a decision of an inter-ministerial meeting on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Liberation War Affairs Adviser Major General (retired.) M A Matin, officials said.

Rahman, who received the country's highest gallantry award Bir Shreshtha, was killed along the frontline during the 1971 War of Liberation against Pakistan and was buried in Tripura.

Officials said a five-member Bangladesh delegation would be present when the remains of Rahman are dug out at Aambasa in Tripura. They will be buried in Bangladesh with state honour.

Two years ago, Bangladesh brought back the remains of another gallantry award recipient, Flight Lieutenant Motiur Rahman, from Pakistan for reburial with state honour.
