The West Bengal government will not appeal against the Calcutta High Court directive for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the mysterious death of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rehman. The state government will also take apppropriate action against those senior police officials who are found guilty in the probe, Left Front chairman Biman Bose said on Wednesday.

"IPS officers are no angels and the state government will follow the required process," said Bose.

Asked whether senior police officers, against whom allegations have been raised, would be removed from their positions, he said appropriate action will be taken by the state government. "The Left Front can only recommend and cannot take a decision," said Bose.

"The Left Front had recommended to the chief minister that the police officers whose names appeared in newspapers and were indicted by the High Court be taken to task irrespective of their positions", he said.

Rizwanur was found near the railway tracks at Dum Dum, some days after his marriage with Priyanka, daughter of noted industrialist Ashok Todi.                                                                            

Bose said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has accepted the ruling and the state government will extend all cooperation needed for the CBI probe. The chief minister, he said, told the Left Front that the judicial enquiry ordered by the state government will continue simultaneously.

The Left Front chairman said the court was supposed to discuss the matter with the state government before ordering a CBI probe, but in this case, the court did not do so.

Bose said although many cases were pending in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's power to order a CBI inquiry, the West Bengal government has accepted the HC order considering the nature of the case.
