D D Lapang was on Saturday sworn in as the chief minister of Meghalaya.

Lapang will head the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.

Lapang's swearing-in follows J D Rymbai's exit from the current dispensation earlier in the day following a directive from Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Earlier, Lapang called on Governor M M Jacob and staked claim to form the ministry stating that he was elected the new Congress Legislature Party leader.

Senior Congress leader and Union Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi told the media that Lapang was unanimously elected the new leader of the CLP.

He said the change of guard was effected through democratic process.

Dasmunsi earlier held a meeting with Rymbai, after which Rymbai went to Raj Bhavan and put in his papers.
