The government is toying with the idea of banning Orkut.com, the popular social-networking Web site, following an attack by Shiv Sena activists on cyber cafes in a Mumbai suburb and the subsequent recommendation by the Maharashtra police to ban the site.

The Shiv Sainiks were protesting against derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji posted by certain hate-communities on Orkut.

Orkut allows users to create their own content and is not proactively monitored unless reported for misuse. If the content is reported to be inappropriate, the Google-run Orkut reviews the content against a set of terms and conditions and removes defamatory or inflammatory content that violates these terms.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team in New Delhi will take a final decision on whether to ban the site or not later on Friday.

Do you think Orkut should be banned? Does such a ban mean suppression of freedom? Or is the ban justified?

Tell us what you think.
