Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef, charged in connection with last month's failed car bomb attacks in Britain, will not be extradited to the UK while proceedings against him continue in Australia, according to Attorney General Philip Ruddock.

27-year-old Haneef, who was taken into custody on July 2 when he attempted to leave Australia on a one-way ticket, was charged on Saturday with providing "reckless" support to a terrorist group and will be held until at least Monday when a Brisbane court decides whether to grant him bail or not.

"In relation to extradition, Australia will not normally surrender a person for extradition where there were outstanding matters that had to be dealt with here," Ruddock was quoted as saying by The Age on Sunday.

"We have another case involving a gentleman charged with terrorist offences in Sydney who has been sought in Lebanon," he said adding, "the fact that he has been sought in Lebanon is a matter that will be dealt with when any of the charges that remain here to be concluded have been finalised."
