The Border Security Force on Wednesday lodged a strong protest with the Pakistan Rangers at flag meeting on the border over an exchange of fire during an unsuccessful infiltration bid by militants at the Matkola border outpost in the Jammu frontier that left two Indian border guards injured.
The Pakistan Rangers said its personnel were not involved in the incident, which it described as 'the handiwork of militants,' officials said.
The protest was lodged during a flag meeting of company commanders at the border outpost where the incident occurred early Wednesday morning.
"We lodged a strong protest with Pakistan Rangers at a flag meeting at Matkola outpost in Khour sector in the Jammu frontier on Wednesday," BSF Additional Deputy Inspector General K S Chouhan told PTI.
Chouhan, who as chief of the BSF's intelligence wing, is monitoring the situation along the border following the firing, said: "While we lodged a protest, our Pakistani counterparts denied firing from their side and termed it as the handiwork of militants. But we told them that after the use of illumination bombs, which lit up the entire area during the exchange of fire, our troops saw those who were possibly militants running towards and entering a Pakistan Rangers' post," he said.
Nearly 80 to 100 rounds, including from AK rifles, were fired from the Pakistani side, Chouhan added.
