Shiromani Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal will take oath as the chief minister of Punjab on Friday.

This was announced by Badal after a joint meeting of the SAD-Bharatiya Janata Party combine, which elected him as its leader.

The swearing-in will take place at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium at Mohali near Chandigarh, he told reporters.

Earlier, a meeting of SAD legislators elected him as the leader of the SAD Legislature Party, which was followed by the joint meeting of newly-elected legislators of the two parties.

Senior BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu were also present at the meeting.

Badal said the two parites would jointly stake claim after the notification of the election was issued by the Election Commission.

Eighty-year old Badal will become the chief minister for the fourth time having held the post earlier in 1970-71 for 15 months, 1977-1980 for 32 months and 1997-2002 for five years.

The SAD-BJP alliance stormed back to power winning 67 seats routing the Congress, which bagged 44 seats in the 117-member State Assembly.

The remaining five seats went to the Independents. Polling for the Beas Assembly constituency has been deferred to March 11 following poll-related violence.
