Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh is a happy man.

His party has wrested two northern states from the Congress just a month before the biggest of all Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Rajnath says it is the non-implementation of the policies of the Congress that has led to its crushing defeat in Punjab and Uttarakhand.

While the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance is heading for a two-third majority in Punjab, the BJP is heading for a comfortable majority in the Uttarakhand state assembly polls.

"In both states, the people have voted the Congress out because they were upset with their rule. We won these states because we raised issues that were close to the people. The decision about next chief minister in Uttarakhand would be taken at the parliamentary board meeting on Tuesday at 5.30," he said.

He hoped that the results of these states would have a bearing on Uttar Pradesh, which goes to polls in seven phases in April/May.
