The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday said the Assembly poll results in Punjab and Uttarakhand are indicative of beginning of the end for the Congress-led government at the Centre.

Reacting to the trends -- the Congress is trailing in Punjab and Uttarakhand -- senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley told NDTV that the poll results in the two states showed that voters cannot be taken for granted.

Referring to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's legal campaign against the alleged corrupt practices of his rival, SAD president and former Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, Jaitley said the voters have expressed their distaste for anti-corruption campaigns taking personal overtones.

"There is a lesson to be learnt here. If there is vindictiveness, it is bound to be counter-productive," Jaitley said.

"If there is a case against someone the law can take its own course, but when one is in power, one cannot use the police to harass the political opponent," Jaitley said, adding that the people did not like this kind of vindictiveness.

"The last time there was lot of anti-incumbency the urban areas of Punjab. But anti-incumbency did not exist this time," the senior BJP leader said, explaining the Akali-BJP combine giving lead to its main opponent Congress in cities in Punjab.
