The army on Wednesday morning gunned down a hardcore United Liberation Front of Asom militant following a fierce encounter at Inthang village near Manabhum reserve forest in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh bordering Upper Assam.

A security source informed that a four-member team of ULFA militants were on their way to Tengapani forest in Arunachal Pradesh when they came face to face with an army team.

In the ensuing encounter that lasted for about 30 minutes, one ULFA militant was killed and another was injured.

The injured militant managed to flee with the help of two other militants. The incident took place at around 6.30 am on Wednesday.

The slain ULFA militant was identified as Kabin Moran, son of one Holou Moran of Kardoiguri Bishnupur village in Tinsukia district.

A joint team of the army and Assam police earlier had killed another ULFA militant at Barekuriha village in Rangiya sub-division of Kamrup district following a brief encounter two days back. The militant suspected to be involved in a recent bomb blast in the railway town of Rangiya was hiding in a house in the village.

Meanwhile, the operation against the banned ULFA was continuing all over the state although the militant group withdrew boycott of 33rd National Games that is being held in Guwahati 'in response to appeal from the state's noted sportspersons and sports lovers.'

A large number of villagers blocked the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh highway at Philobari in Doom Dooma area of Tinsukia district on Tuesday following the arrest of four youths from the area by security forces for their alleged link with the banned ULFA.
