Five suspects are being questioned by the police in connection with the alleged rape of a Finnish woman in the satellite city of Navi Mumbai, a top officer said on Thursday.

"We have picked up five people on suspicion and we're interrogating them. A medical examination has been carried out on the victim and the report is expected," the commissioner of police, Navi Mumbai, Ramrao Wagh told PTI.

The 36-year-old victim, who was on a multiple-entry visa to India along with her husband, had alleged that she had been raped and assaulted by the driver of the vehicle in which she hitched a ride in the wee hours on Tuesday.

After having food and drink alone at an eatery in CBD Belapur node on Monday night, she could not find an auto-rickshaw to get back to her home at nearby Nerul's Sector 19.

She took a lift from a private car whose driver, she said, took her to the nearby Parsik Hill, where he assaulted and raped her.

The woman, with assault marks on her face, was abandoned at a petrol pump by the man and even refused medical assistance when a police party spotted her in the wee hours.

Later, she got herself admitted in a private hospital in Mumbai and alleged rape, after which a complaint was filed. "Those picked up include drivers as well as men who frequent the area at that point of time," Wagh said.
