The Gujarat unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in an open letter to the Election Commission, on Saturday sought action against Congress president Sonia Gandhi [Images] and party leader Digvijay Singh, following its complaint to the constitutional body on December 2.

In an open letter, published in vernacular newspapers, Jayantilal S Barot, general secretary, the state BJP said, "The entire country and BJP as a complainant want to know as to why the Election Commission has not so far taken any action against Sonia and Singh."

The complaint comes in the wake of the remarks made by Sonia Gandhi at a rally in south Gujarat, where she referred to the state government as "merchants of death".

Also, BJP's open letter to EC seeks action against Digvijay Singh who had talked about the "existence of Hindu terrorism in Gujarat" recently.

Barot said that on the one hand, the notice issued to Chief Minister Narendra Modi [Images] (for his remarks justifying the encounter of Soharabuddin) was publicised through the media and, on the other hand, no steps were taken on the BJP's complaint against Sonia and Singh.

This only goes on to create an impression that the conduct of elections is not independent and impartial, the open letter said.
